History of Black Friday
Understanding where Black Friday came from, helps to place it in the broader context of the modern holiday shopping season.
Origins of the Holiday Shopping Season
Holiday gift-giving is a centuries-old tradition, but the holiday shopping season is very much a creation of 20th-century consumer culture.
A Parade of Sponsors
You’ve heard of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade held every Thanksgiving morning in New York City. That blowout event, watched and attended by millions around the United States, is merely the best-known of a gaggle of Thanksgiving weekend parades.
In their mid-20th-century heyday, these parades drew crowds in most major cities and plenty of smaller towns too. Like the Macy’s parade, many were sponsored by local or national retailers. Back in the day, that meant mostly department stores. The motive was clear: By attaching their names to the most visible events on the pre-holiday calendar, department stores reminded their audiences that they were open for business in the coming holiday shopping season. Over time, Thanksgiving parades came to mark the unofficial start of that season.

Fixing the Holiday Shopping Calendar
When President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation establishing Thanksgiving in 1863, he decreed the holiday would fall on the last Thursday of November. And it did until 1939 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to move Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday of November. Congress passed legislation to make the change official in 1941.
Why did Roosevelt move Thanksgiving one week earlier, and why did Congress acquiesce to the change? Because a powerful coalition of retailers and other business interests asked them to.
By this time, the holiday shopping season was synonymous with the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. When Thanksgiving fell on November 30, as it did in 1939, that left only 24 holiday shopping days – and sometimes fewer, as many stores closed on Sundays back then. Naturally, this worried retailers and retail-adjacent businesses, who reasoned that busy holiday shoppers would simply shop less in a shorter season.
Their pitch to Roosevelt was more egalitarian: A longer holiday shopping season would be good for the American economy. That sounds dubious, but remember that the United States was still struggling to shake off the aftereffects of the Great Depression back in the late 1930s.
Whatever the idea’s economic merits, Roosevelt was sold, and the day that would later be known as Black Friday marked the official start of the holiday shopping season.
What time does it start?
Technically speaking, Black Friday starts at 12:00 a.m. local time on November 26 for online retailers. However, Black Friday sales start whenever each retailer decides their deals will go live.
Judging from what we saw last year, several retailers will be releasing new deals every week leading up to the main event.
What is Black Friday?
During this annual sale, retail prices heavily decrease for 24 hours in an attempt to get people to splash the cash in the run-up to Christmas.
Although in recent years, particularly online, Black Friday has turned into a two-week shopping event with retailers competing to start their sales the earliest in the hope of luring in customers first.
In the States, customers often queue for hours, even days to get their hands on the best bargains. Many stores have yet to make an official announcement about Black Friday and if they will open on Thanksgiving night. Several others such as Walmart, Sam's Club, Best Buy, and JCPenney will be closed for the holiday due to the pandemic.
Instead, many deals will be posted to their sites to avoid long lines overnight and mass crowds. The hoards of people are more reserved in the UK, with the majority of Brits opting to shop online in more recent years. But unfortunately, the shopping mania has been known to descend into violence in the UK, as people argue over discounted gadgets and appliances.

What should you buy on Black Friday?
Since it falls a few weeks before the gift-giving season, Black Friday provides excellent opportunities to buy and save on all your holiday gifts before the last-minute rush.
It's nearly guaranteed that you'll get great value for your money on certain products during Black Friday — but some products tend to see better discounts at other times of the year. If you go in knowing what you're looking for, you're less likely to be ripped off by a fancy-looking coupon or to spend money on products you don't need.
Shoppers can expect tons of great deals — including so-called "doorbusters" — online before and early on in Black Friday. During the event, prices will drop to all-time lows, often beating out prices we see over the course of the year. The sale covers every product category: tech, home and kitchen, fashion, and smart home.
This Black Friday, shoppers should expect to see similar offers to the ones we saw on Amazon Prime Day, except more wide-ranging.
Historically, Black Friday has been a great time to purchase big-ticket electronics — especially larger TVs. Whether you're looking for a top-of-the-line Samsung set or LG OLED, or a budget-friendly TCL or Hisense model, Black Friday will likely deliver several deals.
Much like Amazon Prime Day, we saw tons of discounts on smart home products last Black Friday. Amazon Echo products dropped to their lowest prices ever, plus we saw several discounts and bundles on Google's recently released products.
This Black Friday we expect to see discounts on the latest Xbox and Playstation console releases, provided they're in stock. While we didn't see any markdowns on the consoles last year, we did see a few bundles crop up and we expect more of them in 2021.
If you're looking for a kitchen upgrade, Black Friday is a great time to shop. We saw big discounts on Instant Pot pressure cookers, KitchenAid appliances, pots and pans, plus everything else you'll want for the upcoming holiday season.
Of course, the deals found during Black Friday are incredibly wide-ranging. There have also been several deals on diapers, toilet paper, and other household essentials.
What stores offer Black Friday 2021 deals?
Nearly every retailer from big box stores, like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and Target, and start-ups, like Leesa, Casper and Our Place, offer some sort of promotion and half-price products.
What stores have deals?
Outside of a few notable exceptions like REI, nearly every major retailer and direct-to-consumer company are offering markdowns during the event. We've seen deals from Walmart, Best Buy, Dell, Amazon, Adorama, Lowe's, The Home Depot, and more.
As we do every Black Friday, we will be sifting through all of the offers and rounding up the best deals from your favourite retailers.
