Will Robots Erase Warehouse Workers In The Future?

With robot-based technology and artificial intelligence changing the way we live and work, what will happen to warehouse workers when robots fully take over?

With the implementation of robot-based technology in the not-so-distant future potentially managing every aspect of our lives, from preparing our food to making our bed, what will happen when robots with artificial intelligence take over the job of warehouse workers?
A fear of automated robots being programmed to perform at a superior pace than that of its human counterparts has left warehouse workers feeling both terrified and enthusiastic at the prospect of working alongside mechanical work colleagues. But is there really any need to worry over robots being the cause of mass job unemployment, or is robot-based technology simply there to help?

Rise of the robots?
According to a
study from the University of Illinois, the pressure of living up to the expectations created by advanced technology has left warehouse workers feeling increased pressure to work harder, faster and under more scrutiny. This increased critical observation by job bosses leaves workers with a sense of heightened anxiety and the feeling that employers could simply replace them at any given moment in favour of automated technology that can outpace and outmatch human productivity.
Power to the people
While robots may outperform and outmatch human workers in speed and efficiency, there is one aspect in which we surpass our robotic counterparts, and that is adaptation. “The next decade is a story not about job loss, but more so about changes in job quality,” said a co-author of the study, as human workers utilise the many functions of technology and adapt to its benefits, which in the long run can help reduce monotonous and physically strenuous activities, thus creating other opportunities in which human skill is required.

Better working conditions for warehouse workers
The move towards automated technology in warehouses also present an opportunity for start-up companies and businesses to develop robotics that can perform functions accurately and safely such as handling heavy goods that could otherwise potentially put workers at risk. As a result, this could make workers available to perform other tasks such as product quality, logistics, customer service and more complex tasks that require a human touch.
Future Opportunities
While we don’t envision a robot takeover occurring any time soon, technology is advancing and companies are looking at machinery to perform tasks and improve productivity as we progress into a society where we are more reliant upon technology to perform our everyday tasks. But while automated technology is implemented in the workplace, other jobs become available and this is a
huge opportunity for workers to upskill themselves and move into newer positions.
